Speech sound disorders refer to any problem, or set of problems, with the perception, motor production, or phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segments, including phonotactic rules defining permissible speech sound sequences in a language. Speech sound disorders can have biological or functional causes. The underlying structural, sensory-perceptual, or motor-neurological origins of organic speech sound issues. Idiopathic disorders of the functional speech sound have no known underlying cause.Functional speech sound disorders encompass both those that impair the motor creation of speech sounds as well as those that affect the linguistic components of speech output. In the past, these two conditions were referred to as phonological disorders and articulation issues, respectively.
