Pure tone audiometry, or PTA, is the primary hearing test used to establish a person's hearing threshold levels. PTA also employs bone and air conduction audiometry. It makes determining the kind, severity, and pattern of a hearing loss easier. PTA is carried out on adults and kids who are old enough to engage in the testing procedure because it depends on patient response to pure tone stimuli. PTA only evaluates behavioral or threshold hearing thresholds. PTA is useful for other kinds of hearing testing, like click auditory brainstem response. In order to deliver ear- and location-specific thresholds and responses, PTA uses frequency-specific pure tones.
