Speech sound problems relate to any difficulty or combination of difficulties with perception, motor production, or phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segments in a language, including phonotactic rules defining permitted speech sound sequences. Organic or functional speech sound problems can exist. Organic speech sound abnormalities are caused by a motor/neurological, structural, or sensory/perceptual problem. Idiopathic functional speech sound problems have no known cause. Organic speech sound impairments are caused by motor/neurological illnesses, structural abnormalities, and sensory/perceptual disorders.
