Since it rests behind the ear, the most popular kind of hearing aid for newborns and kids is known as a behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid. BTE hearing aids connect to an earpiece, which can be a little plastic dome that is available in different sizes or a specially built earpiece known as an earmold, to transmit sounds into the ear. For a number of reasons, your audiologist could suggest an earpiece or dome. Earmolds must be adjusted as the ears develop, and domes must be periodically replaced due to wear and tear. Infants and young children typically require three to four (and perhaps more) sets of earmolds per year due to their rapid growth. If earmolds and domes do not fit snugly, sound may leak out of the ears and generate feedback, which prevents hearing aids from working as well as they could.
